Frequently Asked Questions

There are many approaches to therapy, and because of this, therapy is most certainly not one size fits all.  In your very first session, called an intake session, you and your therapist will work together to obtain your history, develop goals for treatment, determine the frequency of treatment, and come up with a diagnosis.  There is no therapy conducted during the intake session.  The intake session is an information gathering session.

After your intake, you and your therapist will work for several sessions to build what is called rapport, or a therapeutic alliance in which there is trust.  If there is no trust, there will be no effective treatment.

Once trust has been established, and both you and your therapist are feeling confident in proceeding with services, you will work together to reach your stated goal one step at a time utilizing treatment modalities specific to your treatment needs.

A typical therapeutic hour is about 50 minutes.  There are some treatment modalities that benefit from longer sessions, most notably EMDR and couples work, which can last up to 75 minutes.  It is not recommended to do less than a 50 minute session very often, as this can slow progress tremendously.

We do not. Choosing to not panel with any insurance agencies allows for greater protection of client health information because it exchanges fewer hands, and gives the client more say in how long their sessions are and in how long they participate in therapy.  At this time, there are no plans to take insurance, but we do provide receipts of all transactions, which depending on a clients insurance carrier, may be reimbursable.  To see if you qualify for reimbursement from your insurance carrier, please contact the number on the back of your card.  For more information, please check out our Rates and Insurance page.

Frequency of sessions will also vary by client.  For clients working on trauma, weekly sessions are recommended; especially if EMDR or the SSP is being used.

For clients who have a lower level of need or are approaching graduation, bi-monthly, monthly, or quarterly sessions may be more appropriate.

Please see our Rates and Insurance section for an itemized listing of services and their costs.

I have heard it said that therapy is about 70% relationship and 30% technique.  If this is true, then finding a therapist you feel heard, valued, and accepted by is in some ways more important than the modalities they use; though it is good practice in our profession to only incorporate evidence based treatment practices.  If after a few sessions you do not feel connected to your therapist, it is best to let them know so they can either work it out with you, or provide you with referrals to consider.

This will vary by client and also by treatment approach.  Because everyone coming in to therapy is different, it is impossible to estimate how much time will be needed without a thorough intake assessment.  This is an excellent question to ask after that process has been completed.

At this time, we are only offering telehealth services.  We are strongly considering having an office in the future, though there are no plans for this at this time.

Yes, but with a few caveats.  Everything you say in a session we are ethically bound to keep within that session unless there is concern about danger to self, danger to others, child abuse, elder abuse, and/or neglect.

In the event of danger to self, a clinician is obliged to keep their client safe until the danger has passed.  This can sometimes result in temporary hospitalization.

In the event of danger to others, we are obliged with a Duty to Warn.

In the case of child abuse or neglect, we are obliged to act as Mandated Reporters, and report any reasonable suspicion we may have to the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS).  For elder abuse or neglect, we are obliged to report any reasonable suspicion to Adult Protective Services.

We recommend you start with a free 15 minute consultation; which you can do through this website, calling us by phone, or sending us an email.  This way you can get a feel for your therapist, their treatment style, and decide if you would like to go any further with them. You can then schedule an intake session with your therapist if you wish to proceed.

After your first appointment, future appointments can be scheduled either through the client portal, or with your therapist.
